Synopsis of Rummy

For any reader not familiar with Rummy here is a quick synopsis.

Rummy is a classic card game that is played through out the world. It is a skill game similar to Poker in that in the long run a player of high caliber will win out over opponents of lesser caliber. That being said the game is also similar to poker in that in a hand by hand basis luck can prevail. Rummy is a game with a long history and as many people know is one of those games that you played with your parents growing up. A well known poker legend Stuart Unger (winner of 3 World Series of Poker Main Event Bracelets, and as a side note he is the only player to win three. Johnny Moss was awarded three and I say awarded because the first was done via a vote amongst all those playing) got his start playing Gin Rummy (the most well known, and most widely played form of Rummy).

In the game of Rummy the goal is to get all the cards out of your hand. Each player typically two but up to four are dealt 10 cards face down to start the game, after the last player has received their last card the next card is turned face up to start the discard pile. The first player to act (player to the right of dealer, in rummy the dealer is in a distinct disadvantage as apposed to poker) has the option of picking up the face up card or taking the top card from the deck. After the player has choosen which card to take they must either knock or discard. To “Knock” you must lay all your cards face up on the table (known as “Melding”). In order to lay cards they must be a “Run” sequenced cards of the same suit minimum three to a max of thirteen, or a “Set”(Three cards of the same value) or a “Book”(four cards of the same value). Depending on the rules of the variety of Rummy your playing you may need to discard a single card to knock, you may be able to have a single card Nine and under left over after the discard, or you may have lay all your cards. Depending on the rules of the variety of Rummy your playing after a player has knocked, everyone may then have a chance to “Meld” their remaining cards to lower their negative score. Scoring is also dependant on the rules and variety you are playing as some varieties count only the cards in your hand which is negative, some varieties count the cards in your hand against those cards that have been melded. One of the hardest parts of Rummy is knowing what cards to keep and what cards to throw as it may be likely that your opponent will require a card in your hand and you in turn may require a card in their hand to complete a set or a run.

A Player’s Royal Rummy Review

I recently had the pleasure of being turned on to a very different “gaming website” and I use that term loosely. I was told about a online version of the Classic Rummy, where you could play for both play money and real funds. This information got me excited as I love playing the game Gin Rummy a variation of Rummy. I was eager to check it out so much so that I actually “Donked” off all my chips in a poker tourney just to check it out hehe opps. I was very happy with the website interface it was simple, clean and inviting. I hate when you go to a site for a gaming site and it’s cluttered and does not seem inviting. I want to feel welcomed and not affronted and this site definitely made me feel welcome. Right on the main page it listed the 4 varieties of Rummy available Rummy, Gin Rummy, Kalooki Rummy and Oklahoma Rummy as well as Tiles Rummy.

The site has an area in which they show there current promotion that is not tacky, as well as links to more info through out the website. Most importantly they have a How to Play, that is very informative and user friendly. Thus even someone who has never played the game can learn easily and comfortably. They have a 24/7 live support, which I put through the paces at 3:00am MST I sent them a message and had a reply within 15 minutes, most gaming sites I find I will not receive a response till the next morning so this was a nice difference. The site is very user friendly the download is simple and smooth as well as the un-install. The site does not hit you with a bunch of pop-ups or ad banners this was very nice. Once you download the software and begin to play it is very smooth, the play money or as they call it practice money games have tutorials and links to FAQ’s. After a bit of play however the little tutorial that tells you they have centered you and to discard become a little redundant. I can not speak about playing for cash as I never got that far into the site as I am confident in saying I am a good amateur but likely dead money, the one thing that starts to happen quickly is they try and push you towards playing for money. I must say though they do this in the most tactful way possible so that even though they are trying it is not uncomfortable or a deterrent.

The site offers both ring games as well as tournaments; also they have free rolls on Wednesday and Sunday. The site offers a variety of Bonus both Deposit, and refers a friend.

A bit of positive news for United States based players Rummy is considered a game of skill thus excluding from the infamous poker killer bill known more commonly as UIGEA. So players from most of the Fifty States are welcome the only states not allowed is available on there site http://www.rummyroyal.com/how_to_play/real_money.html

They accept the usual suspects when it comes to deposit methods Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Pay pal, Money bookers, and Discover Card.

The one thing that may deter some real money players is that the cut of the pot that the site takes seems a little excessive in my opinion, as they take approximately 10% of the pot. I could not find anywhere the specific amount they take.

I must say that I was very happy with the interface, the playability and the pure enjoyment this site brought me. It was actually to the point where I had to force myself to stop just to right this review so others may find a similar night of enjoyment.
